There are a few different ways to do this. I'm working a utility that will help with this, but in the meantime, the best way is to watch /var/log/pihole.log
when you start up Steam and see what domains get queried. Those should then be whitelisted. You can also try searching the existing list for the word steam to find out if any sub domains are already on the list. This FAQ should help get you started on searching the existing list for a domain:
http://pi-hole.net/faq/how-do-i-whitelist-or-blacklist-a-webiste-or-domain/
Eventually, I would like to compile a list of legitimate domains that break certain sites like Steam. Please post them if you discover them.

It also depends when you have installed Pi-hole. If that happened more than a month ago one off the blacklist that was enabled by default contains many normal (non ad) domains, trying to recall the list from kemory but I think it is something like mahalo? If you disable that list, and then update the domains you should be around 300.000 blocked domains (instead of nearly a million) and that might fix it.

Yes, that is true. It is the mahakala list, which was also blocking domains like microsoft.com and xkcd.com
from pi-hole.
mahakala is blocking http://steamcommunity.com/. That may cause some issues.

I just checked, my install is a week old. Mahakala is already commented out.
I'll go over the logs to see what's up.

Easiest way to do that is to flush the logfile first
sudo truncate -s 0 /var/log/pihole.log
And then check the logfile right after you have tried steam, which is located at
/var/log/pihole.log

Can you check and see what the size is for /etc/pihole/gravity.list? If it's around 12510000 then it still has the Maha list in it. Until the bug fix is in place it's possible to have Maha commented out, but the list could still be used to create gravity.list. Maha is causing a block of Steam on my test system. (SteamCommunity, SteamPowered and another Steam domain are listed to be blocked by Maha.)

@Difusio Were you able to get Steam to work?
from pi-hole.
Yes I was, although it's not really reliable. Sometimes I'll have to
authenticate with steam guard again. Logs aren't giving out clues.

Steam works fine on my Pi-hole. Try deleting all the lists from /etc/pihole/
, make sure the mahakala list is commented out, and the run gravity.sh
again.
