Yup. We use mplexporter and that requires matplotlib 1.3.1.

but that's hard to find and unclear that it's a hard requirement.

Can we check the version on our import (https://github.com/plotly/python-api/blob/master/plotly/tools.py#L28) and return a friendly error?
