Right now in WS2 I think we only show the linear/log setting if the type is already linear or log. This is pretty limiting, as for example you can't change numeric to category (ran into this myself trying to use plotly with my mom, she had numeric data but they were just codes she wanted interpreted as categories so they'd be evenly spaced).
But the current behavior does point to the fact that there are really two questions from the user's perspective, which axis.type
merges into one setting:
- What kind of data does this axis represent (numeric, date, categorical)
- If numeric, how should that data be mapped to the screen?
Right now we only allow the user to specify the second one, and we use only the automatic answer for the first, inferred from the data. Ideally we'd keep those two questions distinct in the UI even as we add the ability for the user to override the data type.

I would personally feel fine with a "Type: linear/log/date/categorical" option, at least in the short run :)
