Currently, students at the Cork University Dental School & Hospital are awarded a score of 1 - 6 per treatment that is performed on a patient. These scores are aggregated at the end of the academic year to create an assessment of the student’s ability. This only measures competence in one area. A web based application has been developed which will allow tutors to score (on a scale of 1-6) ‘observations’, based on the students performance in the clinic. These observations fall under the following headings: Core Generic skills, Basic Operative skills, Professionalism, Knowledge and Communication. This will provide a more balanced view of each student’s abilities. Tutors are able to view an analysis of all student data as well as observe the performance of each individual student. Whilst students are only be able to view their own marks, plus an analysis of their performance. This application is focused on a complex data model as well as reporting & analysis methodologies, and accompanied by an appropriate user interface.
