I've reverted the behaviour where the client would wait until we have a handshake and socket ID before being considered connected.

I can't reproduce your other issue though - connecting to public channels results in the subscription succeeded event being received and the relevant callbacks being fired - my functional specs back this up.

Luke, thanks for reverting the pusherConnectionDidConnect behavior (and all you work on this very helpful library).

The second issue was my fault. I wasn't passing the Pusher client library version and protocol in the Pusher connection url and this caused the pusher_internal:subscription_succeeded to not be returned.
