I do believe that the most common cause of connection issues over 3G is transparent proxying by the network.
The best way to avoid this is with using encryption. I've just committed support for enabling SSL, by setting the encrypted parameter to YES.
Please try this and let me know if it works for you.

Thanks for your prompt reply Luke but I don't understand how to set SSL encryption. I don't see any SSL parameter in the PTPusher class.
Can you give me the exact line to add ?

Luke, thanks for the suggestion to use encryption. Does libPusher try an encrypted connection (WSS) if it fails to connect on unencrypted (WS)? The Pusher JS library has this behavior. I want to turn on encryption for my pusher app but am afraid it will break existing installations.
Thanks!

I'm closing this issue now; the recommendation is to use an encrypted connection to ensure reliability over the cellular networks and avoid transparent proxying issues.
The library doesn't currently try both, it will try either encrypted or non-encrypted depending on how you create the PTPusher
instance; if anybody thinks this will cause them a problem, please open a new issue.
