Hi,

Double-encoded JSON messages might seem strange at first, but they are here, because we don't enforce any particular message format in our API calls. Because of this, we can't parse incoming data, so it's just passed to clients in the same form as we receive it. Internal events are double-encoded just to keep the protocol consistent.

This isn't something that can be changed anyway, since lots of clients already depend on this format. I noticed our protocol docs don't mention this, so I can see why it seems confusing. I'll update them soon.
