The option --unset is just an alias of pyenv deactivate and I added it for similarity between other pyenv commands (e.g. pyenv shell). I will update the README about that option. Thanks.

Hmm. Maybe this alias will be more pleasant:

$ pyenv virtualenv --unset

and not pyenv activate --unset?

I don't like pyenv virtualenv --unset because the pyenv virtualenv will not be used during activating the existing virtualenv. Like pyenv shell and pyenv shell --unset, I think pyenv activate --unest is suitable here.

If you don't like this alias, you can use pyenv deactivate instead.
