hmm, not 100% sure right now. React doesn't do anything specifically to keyboard events, so it'd be on our keybindings end. Does matplotlib draw the plot in the output? I'm assuming it does.
I can investigate a bit further via the notebook you posted on gitter in a few hours after I take care of something else.

matplotlib draws the output to a memory buffer, which then gets rendered to a <canvas>
element. That <canvas>
element has mouse event handlers on it that call back into Python to update the plot, and that all works. Unfortunately, the keyboard handlers on the <canvas>
element never get called, because (I think) something is stealing those keyboard events before they get there and/or there's something we need to actively do to give it focus.

My assumption was wrong -- I think it's just something more basic and Javascript. I'll probably have a solution shortly.
