Hi Piero,
please have a look at docbook/ch04s17.html from the open-plc-utils. But plcboot is the correct one. You will also need the softloader, PIB file and firmware.

To flash a bare 7420 (when bootloader is running) use plcboot. To upgrade a programmed 7420 (when firmware is running) use plctool.
Firmware must be running in SDRAM in order to write to flash. plcboot is the right toolkit program to write PIB and firmware to SDRAM and start execution on a 6410, 7000 and 7420. It can then, if asked to do so, write a softloader to flash memory then write PIB and firmware to flash memory.
Once a device is programmed, it will always boot from flash and so plctool is the right program to upgrade PIB and/or firmware. There is no need for a softloader because one is already present in flash memory.
