attribute((packed)) is a GCC-specific attribute (also understood by clang) that packs structs to remove as much internal padding as possible. Wrapping the structure definitions with #pragma pack(push, 1), #pragma pack(pop) appears to work on all current compilers, but data_decoder hasn't been updated to reflect that; it's a low-value utility that you shouldn't need unless you're massaging the code away from its reliance on DOS-era data files.

Gotcha. See a lot of compiler specific stuff in there even with #pragma pack(push, 1), #pragma pack(pop):
ssize_t
pragma mark

There may be others

Yep, ssize_t is POSIX (a signed version of the standard size_t). Not sure why there's #pragma mark anywhere, but again, it's a utility that shouldn't be needed unless you know you need it. The game had much more attention paid to portability, though I think there's some minor problem with the CMake-based build process on Windows at the moment.
