You haven't added sprockets (or propshaft) to your Gemfile and done the require, if you're upgrading. Sprockets was removed as a default after alpha 2.

shouldn't jsbundling-rails detect when there is no sprockets and not try to run assets:precompile? or maybe have a dependency on sprockets?

There's a dependency on having either sprockets or Propshaft. You need an asset pipeline.

Maybe the error message could be more explicit then? Like saying that we need sprockets or propshaft?

Problem is that you're generating a rails skeleton using the rails 6 gem, but then pointing it at runtime to rails 7 from GitHub, without doing any of the upgrade steps that'll be necessary from rails 6 -> 7. That's just not going to work. Don't think we need defensive error messages for that.

Ah makes sense, I created the skeleton with 7.0.0.alpha2 but not from the gem from main branch. Thanks a lot for your replies
