It should follow react conventions:

class Foo extends Component {
  render() {
    var modalStyles = {overlay: {zIndex: 10}};

    return(
      <Modal style={ modalStyles }>
        Hello World!

    )

}

As a workaround set modalStyles.overlay["z-index"] = '10;';
