Have you tried using before:git:release?

Yes, that sorta works, but it happens after the git add . --update, so I have to run a separate git add ., which is not "ideal", but I'll just go with it, thanks!

	hooks: {
		"before:release": [
			"echo 'copy the changelog'",
			"git add .",
		],
	},
...
$ Writing changelog to packages/core/CHANGELOG.md
$ git status --short --untracked-files=no
 M .release-it.js

Changeset:
 M .release-it.js

! git add . --update
! echo 'copy the changelog'
! git add .
? Commit (chore(release): Release v1.0.0)? (Y/n)

from release-it.
