Thank you for sending these questions to me and sorry for the delay in getting back to you. The minimal example required quite a bit of external code to get it to run at all. The truth is, it's very difficult to make an automated system for CALPUFF. The difficult parts are generating the geophysical surface file and especially generating the upper air file.

The development of this package has been stalled for quite some time but may resume soon. In the meantime, I would strongly suggest using the SplitR package for dispersion modeling. That package does work quite well and should provide good results especially when using higher-resolution meteorology files.

If that can be an option for your work, I'll gladly provide advice on how to create dispersion models for HYSPLIT.

Dear Richard, yesterday I tried to follow your tip to switch to SplitR, but I think that I will not use it, 'cause the reference models recognized by Italian authorities are AERMOD and CALPUFF. it's really a pity that the development of PuffR is stalled, 'cause it seems a really useful and necessary package ...
