Try the following workaround:

  1. Start the webbrowser up (Firefox or Google Chrome);
  2. Open up a single webtab inside the webbrowser and surf to web.whatsapp.com;
  3. Let the webbrowser load and autologin into WhatsApp Web;
  4. Then right after it is done loading start the WhatsApp Monitor add-on/extension while still inside the running WhatsApp Web webtab;
  5. From here on out do not do anything inside the webbrowser or the running WhatsApp Web webtab itself, like opening up a chat or chatting with anyone or opening other webtabs, just leave the webbrowser running like it is.
  6. Go to the specific WhatsApp chat from inside the WhatsApp app on Android/iOS itself. And open the chat once then leave the chat again for the persons you want to include in the WhatsApp Monitor tracking.
  7. It should now begin logging the specific chats you have interacted with like mentioned. Make sure to always keep the WhatsApp app running on your mobile smartphone, even while in the background for maximum performance.
  8. And of course you should still be able to chat with people while using the WhatsApp apps on Android/iOS without any problems. But it will end up adding these people into the log.

Let me know if this helped!

Can confirm, timing is variable though. Opening again those contacts' chat fixes this for some minutes.
[Update]
I looked a bit more into this and basically, it seems like the update channel (Websocket) is the same and gets relayed from the Android app to Whatsapp Web when it's open.
Any open chat gets updates as long as it is open, then for some fixed time amount.
Any chat opened on mobile will send updates to Whatsapp Web: let's say I'm tracking contacts A, B and C on the Web client, if I open contact D's chat on my mobile, he'll be tracked as well.

Seems like a quick fix for this would be adding back the chat rotation feature, maybe instead of adding the "monitored" contacts list by hand, the contact name in the chat might be used as a toggle for adding that contact to the rotation.
A button to toggle the chat rotation globally and a setting for the time intervals might be useful too.

Hello, I did a test but it did not work. Not selecting the Chats in Whatsup Web results in no values reported and no notification that account is online. What happens if you do select/open the contacts from within the browser in WhatsApp Web? I think the problem that is bound to happen for now, is that after a while WhatsApp Monitor only focuses tracking the specific contact which you currently have opened up in WhatsApp Web and stops tracking the others...
