What version of Puppet do you have installed on that box?
I'm guessing all the extra $ signs aren't in your manifest?

Sorry about not responding, I was on the east coast with spotty internet for the holidays.
We are running 2.7.6 on our boxes. Sorry about the extra $ signs, copy/paste strikes again, they aren't in our manifest.

Hmmm, now it seems to have fixed itself. I'm not sure what I did to make it start working, but single quotes are definitely working for me now.
