try commenting out this line in functions.php:

include_once('includes/roots-htaccess.php');

Yes! This worked, so far! I say that because these pesky server errors like to pop back up after a few minutes! I will report back soon as to if everything has stayed normal.

Yes, everything is still working great and I just upgraded to 3.1.1. Again, Thank you for the help. Just so I can try and learn, what exactly was that line's purpose?

awesome, no problem. that line serves most of the .htaccess from the html5 boilerplate project -- you could try including it again and taking out certain parts of it if you'd like, but none of is it necessary in order to use roots

i had this same issue and from what I've read think it has to do with 1and1..... which makes me sad because I've used them for years and don't want to switch. ah well problem solved for now... thanks!
