One quick way to fix this is to replace syntax='proto3', from all the _pb2.py files.

use python3

Make sure you don't have older versions of protobuf installed anywhere in your system. This helped for me:

$ sudo apt-get remove python-protobuf
$ pip uninstall protobuf
$ pip install "protobuf==3.0.0b4"
