Wouldn't it be possible to use git_remote_ls to get a remote_head reference, and then have access to the master branch oid ? It would be possible that way to know the status of the remote branch :)

Perhaps! I don't know how to get your hands on a git_remote, however, without going through a git_repository originally

I'm gonna close this for now as I think it's something libgit2 doesn't support, but feel free to file an upstream bug!
