I'd be happy to implement this in src/main.py -- can anyone suggest what the best way to check if a package name is real?

I assume you mean main.rs 😉 This is where it'd be really handy to be better integrated with cargo as the crates.io index seems like the natural place to source this information.

Barring that you can probably just hit the crates.io API live, e.g.:

https://crates.io/api/v1/crates/slice_deque

...returns JSON but "name":"slice-deque"
