If ultimately the caching is going to be turned off using #65, I'd rather not spend too much time investigating how to share cache.

In my particular case, I won't need both (turn off caching and sharing cache).
However, I think in general, it would help if dependent projects could share their cache. It will benefit those who are not turning off the cache entirely. (I might myself use that configuration in another project)

Also, I have a question: How likely is that cache could be turned off entirely? Is it really a cache, or more like temporary storage for expanded jars and hence unavoidable?
from sbt-assembly.
If I remember correctly, the only thing that are actually cached is SHA-1 and the output jar. The rest of the files are just temporary expanded, which can be cleaned up afterwards but unavoidable. So that'll probably solve the space issue, but it will still take time.
Sharing SHA-1 won't buy you much, and recognizing which jars are used by other project etc. will take space and more complicated code.
