I think for us, the best way would be to be able to work with both versions, second best preference would be to work with rdflib >= 6.0 (and if the first option is not convenient to implement, then I think it's the best one), and third best (and temporary) would be to pin rdflib to currently working version.

Would it be ok to wrap this in a try/except AttributeError then, or would you prefer something like the following?

 jsonld_string = g.serialize(format='json-ld', auto_compact=not expanded)
 if isinstance(jsonld_string, bytes):
     jsonld_string = jsonld_string.decode('utf-8')

The second option looks better, perhaps with a comment that it's needed for compatibility with different rdflib versions
