What is your distro? If Fedora, thats is packaging issue, you can try copying /etc/pam.d/gdm-password -> /etc/pam.d/sddm

Arch Linux. I don't have a gdm-password in pam.d.

Which sddm version do you use? There were important pam changes in git version. If that doesn't help, you can try copying pam file from your previous working DM.

Also I didn't have a previous working dm, I used startx before (and if i use it it still works fine)

OK... Auto-login has some issues related to PAM, probably this is one of them too. Please try without auto-login.
