Can you clarify the problem? Why is an invalid geni_user used to create the temp vmap entry?

To create a temporary vmap, the geni_user is a required (foreign key) field. If we attempt to release a vessel, changeusers to null ("") is performed on vessel, but there's no clear way how to convey this in the temporary vesselmap since there is no geni_user associated with the transition.

This is an artifact of a proposed implementation that was scrapped. The current backend doesn't have these issues.
