Would the removal of this code further improve performance for fastnumbers in the latest python versions in a significant way?

No, I don't anticipate that it would. All of the python2/python3 compatibility is done through #ifdef statements and macros, so there is no runtime penalty for the library supporting both versions. It will make it easier to maintain, though.
