If I convert the same xls file to xlsx and use similar methods for your 'xlsx' module, I get a process out of memory error..

@zoo- my guess is that it's a property that's not being parsed properly (related to the fact that strings are encoded in different ways). I have a temporary patch for it which I'll try to push soon
