Additionally, there's currently no way to use the file combinators with others since they work directly on ByteStrings. Is there a way to allow both at the same time or should we just make sure they can't be used together?

I think you can't use them together conceptually, because a 'file' input type will give your handler a ByteString as input, while 'json' and 'xml' will give you some a that was parsed.

Which would make most sense to get as input for fileI: (ByteString, Maybe a), Maybe (ByteString, a), or even Either ByteString a?

I think if we want to do this, we could make some combinator to allow inputs in different formats, resulting in an Either ByteString a (or, more generally, an Either a b where you pass it two dictionaries for a and b). Something like eitherI fileI jsonI.
