I had this problem as well; it was due to the fact that the temporary DB creation was failing, and since the error handler wasn't properly registered at that time no error would be reported. The error would then cause the rest of SapphireTest::setUp() to be skipped, so the original mailer property was never set.
Could you see if the part of SapphireTest::setUp() that sets the original mailer is being called? This patch doesn't really fix the problem, but I suspect just further hides another error.

This is now guarded so error shouldn't be triggered.
