Craig,
it seems the documentation is somewhat misleading as to what is required when you don't want to (de)serialize custom types (but only "standard" ones).
You still need to bring the DefaultJsonProtocol in scope with

import DefaultJsonProtocol._

Once you do this you test code will compile (and work).
