@stefanolson, thanks for trying :) I believe Squirrel works pretty much flawlessly, it's quick and elegant. It's only when something goes wrong that Squirrel's qualities come back to bite :) It's the moment of doubt when I see nothing happening on someone's computer while they install (if I happen to observe) that I'd like to avoid.

a clear error message should be shown to the user, including an easy way to get the log file so they can send it back to the application developer.

This should already be happening, check out https://github.com/Squirrel/Squirrel.Windows/blob/master/src/Setup/UpdateRunner.cpp#L7, but we'll have to do some more verification to make sure that this is the case
