Hi Kris.
Good to see you involved here. I had a call to Thomas (eigentor) today and mentioned some ideas regarding the "style switcher":

  • a directory ("schemes") with scheme-related images and css file (including color definitions)
  • a dropdown as theme setting which displays all available schemes
  • a preview that shows the screenshot.png (or preview.png, or whatever) of the active scheme
  • an override of template_process_html that modifies the loaded styles by adding the css files of the active scheme

Do you think it can be done this way? Or do you have another approach?

On Request from Webchick to keep the color switching to one method only for core themes, http://drupal.org/node/695292#comment-2560512 this will only be temporary (while still needed) to display and develop the color styles. If the fixes to color module make it in, it should be possible to do all the color changing with it.

We must keep switching font face (only arial and times are choices) and header image (give names and little handmade previews) as separate settings.

As this is only going to be temporary: Maybe creating subthemes is indeed the simplest solution? Stefan already mentioned this.
