I'm not sure what you mean with "messages of new room" but the type attribute in MUC messages is not optional. The Optional thing is that a server can reject messages if the client does it wrong:

"An occupant sends a message to all other occupants in the room by sending a message of type "groupchat" to the room@service itself (a service MAY ignore or reject messages that do not have a type of "groupchat")."

This is definitely a bug in Openfire (and/or other clients) and it should be fixed there.

Also, I'm not sure if you are using the MUC plugin or bare strophe.js, but you could just not filter for the type in you MUC handler if you really want to handle MUC messages without a type.
