The main difference is probably that node-xmpp is primarily a nodejs server that also has some client stuff that you can use via browserify and StropheJS is a client library for browsers. I don't have any experience with node-xmpp but if you want a client in a browser you're probably better of with StropheJS.

Node.js is server side and Strophe.js is client side.

You would want to avoid using server side processing power in the context of XMPP and you will be receiving and sending XMPP stanzas / syntax. Using Node.js for a XMPP application would put a lot pressure on your server as compared to using a client side approach such as Strophe.js as most of the processing is done on the client side. The only significant advantage of node.js is better session management and thats about it.

That's a good point, that's why we want to build it client side. Though node-xmpp now runs client side with browserify. That's why I was asking about features that would differentiate the two.
