I'm sorry you've had problems with this.

I think it's right to keep burning the fuses, but I will try to make it harder to do it accidentally.

You might already be aware of this, but it seems that in some circumstances you can fix the problem
by clocking the chip externally. See e.g. http://www.edaboard.com/thread131804.html

Thanks for your response. Eventually I was able to find up a resonator to get the chip back to life and reburn the fuses. But I am still not clear on why fuses need to be burned: basically, if I have an (non-high V) ISP that talks to the chip, clearly the fuses are in a state OK enough for flashing, and flashing can proceed. On the other hand, as it happened, the fuses were burned, the chip wend dead (as far as the ISP was concerned) and the program could not be flashed.
