What's the mental model you expect? I wonder whether the physical location of
keys on
the pad can be used. One possibility is 2- Replay, 4 - Back, 5 - Pause, 6 -
Fwd, 8
Respond. Of course this breaks down for phones without the traditional key
layout.

I've been using the current layout and do not find it awkward. I don't think any
arrangement will be overly awkward over time because ppl get used to it.

I am not sure about hiding features... the application should have a transparent
feel. The instructions themselves can always be barged in on by advanced users,
which
is what I've gotten in the habit of doing.

Took opinions from DSC staff as well as others with IVR experience in India...

The order by most common command (as you seemed to propose) seems reasonable.
We will
have:

1 => Fwd
2 => Back
3 => Replay
4 => Pause
5 => Respond

I keep thinking it would be valuable to maintain the rev, pause, fwd metaphor
from
other audio media.  How about

1 => Back
2 => Replay
3 => Next
4 => Pause
5 => Respond

Also, is this really fixed? The mapping seems the same to me as before.

I got more opinions on the audio media metaphor, and it seems somewhat split,
with a
slight preference towards order by popularity. This could be something we
experiment
with, but I feel confident with going with the former at the outset.

In the end, people will get used to whatever mapping you choose.

I actually think there is a risk of getting stuck with a bad design here. Its
important to make a good guess up front exactly because of what u say; because
once u
set some default, its going to be like that forever. If I were you, Id get a
physical phone and check out some of the ergonomics of the various designs. For
example, how would u want it to be if you were just skimming a forum?

Yeah it's a tough one. I think the most common operation will be skip fwd,
which is
why it makes sense to have it as 1. Going backward with 2 is awkward, but I
don't
think it should be the first option. The other alternative is going all the way
with
a metaphor of audio player mapped to keys, which I don't think all users will
follow
(at least at the outset).

Again, there wasn't a strong opinion one way or the other. I like the current
layout
except that back is to the right of fwd, but I don't like back being 1.
