I also had this error using:
python-tesseract_0.9-0.4ubuntu0_amd64.deb
python-tesseract_0.9-0.5ubuntu3_trusty_amd64.deb
python-tesseract_0.9-0.5ubuntu_trusty_amd64.deb

with tesseract-ocr 3.03 on Ubuntu 14.04 (64 bit). It does not occur when 
rolling back to:
python-tesseract_0.8-3.0_amd64.deb
