The library in question should be installed via the menu
"Tools -> Google Cloud Tools -> Install Client Libraries".
It installs the client library in your local maven repository.
Can you confirm if it solves the issue?

Note: Please select the module "MobileBackend" in your Android Studio, then run
"Tools -> Google Cloud Tools -> Install Client Libraries".

Thanks for your reply, I just fixed it. Here is what I did:
Fresh checkout (manual git clone) and 'Import Project' in Android Studio. Direct checkout in Android Studio fails, because it will try to download the mobilebackend dependency even before it shows the normal Android Studio environment.
Select MobileBackend, Tools > Google Cloud Tools > Install Client Libraries, but keeps getting error it can't compile the project. So I comment out the dependency and try again.
Now Install Client Libraries succeed, but when I uncomment the dependency it still fails.
When I tried to locate the libraries myself I found this:
....m2\repository\com\google\cloud\backend\mobilebackend\v1-1.19.0-SNAPSHOT
So, tl;dr: Google updated the client to 1.19.0 :)
