Hmmm, thanks for raising these issues. I can see how the instructions are ambiguous and can lead to confusion.

Grid doesn't support splicing, but you can overlay multiple items on top of each other. But what's happening in this level is that there are five distinct grid items, 4 water and 1 poison. This is hinted at with .water and #poison selectors, but can be made more explicit. Grid items get placed left to right, wrapping to new rows like a text document.

Aha, I missed the hint and assumed it was a single water of span 4 and a single poison (in fact I assumed the same in all the levels - including the one with the checkerboard pattern which I found equally weird).

As a grid neophyte, I would need to see the html (or a representation of it) to understand why the initial orderless state looks like that.
