I imagine they used a custom script for 1) extensibility and 2) so it wouldn't hang up vim while the [integration] specs were running.

I see. I also noticed that colored output in RSpec don't work in macvim directly, so I guess that's reason number 3.

That script came from my setup. I find it useful for a few reasons:

  • I like to have the test output and code open at the same time. Running commands directly in Vim loses the output when you go back to the code.
  • I don't have MacVim's environment set up to use the correct Ruby from rbenv and so on. It's more convenient to just use my terminal, which I know is fully configured.
  • I'm not sure how Vim/MacVim handled things like spring, which fork and run in the background. I'd rather run those things in terminal.
