there is also plm:::fitted.plm() which is not exported and plm:::fitted.panelmodel() (not exported and broken), but both don't give us depvar - residuals.

The mismatch is likely due to the implementation of residuals() for plm objects, see http://stats.stackexchange.com/questions/183206/package-plm-random-effect-residuals
