Running: "mvn -U -X -e markdowndoc:doc" causes a NullPointerException! about markdowndoc

This (of course with hindsight :-)) turned out to be due to lack of configuration, like input files when run this way. MarkdownDoc maven plugin cannot be run this way. There is a jar for command line execution.

However code should never throw a NullPointerException so I fixed that and another NPE case also. So now "mvn -U -X -e markdowndoc:doc" ends with this:
