turns out OpenMP coming from the BLAS libraries is the dick over here!
torch.setnumthreads(1) does nothing, but completely turning off system-wide OpenMP with
"export OMP_NUM_THREADS=1"
fixes things, which makes the BLAS library + OpenMP combination the obvious reason.

I am going to try remove OpenBLAS from the ezinstall script and see if there's any bug reports filed in their repo.

To summarize, if you want to fix it for yourself, run this in the shell before running your script:

export OMP_NUM_THREADS=1

This is a bug in the BLAS library on the machine, and the bug has nothing to do with torch. Any program that uses the BLAS library will encounter this bug.
