My current thought is to have a web-based GUI so it can be accessed on-demand as well as remotely, I'll update here if that changes.

OK but don't forget about the security aspect... the minimum for a web based interface is to use SSL connexion.
Plus, you should allow to configure the listening port.

Update: looking into ASP.NET MVC for the web interface which comes with templates and user authentication.
