Unfortunately, current version does not support this feature (local COM port GPS). And I don't know any desktop software that can do this... I have Android application called Traccar Client, if you were able to run it on your laptop (not sure if it possible and will work correctly), you could use it for your task.

PS I also have Dell laptop with GPS ;-) maybe some day I will write such application

Ouch, to bad! But good to know you have the same setup, That will probably trigger your curiousness and start playing with it :)

I have started reading about a client included in the openDMTP project. But it includes creating a client for windows enviroment using Cygwin and so on. It looks like it handles COM ports and so on. But I can't puzzle it all together.
Also someone have converted that project to a .NET enviroment for compiling (source found on bitbucket.org, (searching for openDMTP))... but it is still above my skills.

Anyone used/compiled openDMP here? (just shouting out)
..or anyone interested helping me?

Edit: corrected bitbocket.org to bitbucket.org

Wow, never thought I could get Android Emulator + external GPS to actually work.. but it does!!!
Now... you talked about using the Android version of traccar and point that to my openGTS server (using user/device/password?)...how do I do that?

Here you can get Android application - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.traccar.client&hl=en
Then you need to install Traccar (simply run installer), install OpenGTS and finally configure traccar server to use OpenGTS database (use config from here - http://www.traccar.org/docs/opengts.jsp)
Android client should be configured to your IP address and port 5005

How is it going? Have you managed to set up everything?

Hi!
Yes, sorry for not giving a full review of my solution.
I did install the Android SDK emulator, start it with the "GPS enabled" parameters (using the GPS from my laptop on COM4).
Then I actually found a apk called "GPS Logger" (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mendhak.gpslogger&hl=sv)

That app has native support for OpenGTS server and is the best app i've tried so far.

BUT... all this seams like a really looong way around the problem with not having a windows client for the OpenGTS server. Ok this works, but anyone with the skills would be able to do a small client that sends straight to the server.

Please anyone out the there.. hear my prayers :)

In next traccar version GpsGate client will be supported (http://gpsgate.com/products/gpsgate_client), it has desktop version for Windows. If you want to test it now, I can send you a test build.

what can I say... THANK YOU!. Send me the test build (or link) to: [email protected]
