What release of OpenIndiana is that running?

In the subject you said that the system is hanging, where as in the body you mention that it is crashing. Which is actually going on in this case?

Right, I mean the hang of course.

This is the latest release with several components updated from source including the kernel.

The hang happens while booting from the USB stick, haven't tried doing that from the hard disk yet.

USB vs. the HDD shouldn't make a huge difference. More likely the difference is in the ACPI bits or something similar, we haven't really changed anything in this area.

Unfortunately, since we don't have your hardware, reproducing this and getting it closer to root cause at our end is going to be difficult. If you could somehow send an nmi and cause it to panic, that may help your investigation. Another approach, since you're running OI with a custom kernel bits, is to see what happens if you use our illumos fork either with OI or spinning a custom SmartOS image and seeing which delta introduces the issues.
