The referenced patch is clearly a step in the right direction, and accepting it shouldn't be held up by my comment.

It's not safe to assume that 3+ disks means the user wants only raidz1. I have 13 disks that I want to use in two raidz2 vdevs of 6 disks each, with the last disk as a spare. Plus, I have 3 SSDs.

Ultimately, I'd like to be able to specify something like "raidz2 a b c d e f raidz2 g h i j k l spare m cache n cache o log mirror p q" (where the single letters are actually disk names). I haven't tested with the patch, so maybe that Just Works. If not, I assume the fix would be to relax the validation of the arguments so they can be either disk names or vdev keywords (mirror, raidz, raidz1, raidz2, raidz3, spare, cache, log).

I could add the cache and log devices after the reboot, but allowing it isn't going to be any harder than allowing the raidz vdev specifiers, so you might as well.

This issue has been resolved by @JohnSonnenschein in the 20120113 SmartOS image by TritonDataCenter/smartos-overlay@227e2e1
