I think there isn't anything that prevents Open Realm of Stars running with latest Java.
I could move to Java11 that seems to be LTS and is provided by Ubuntu repositories by default so it is nice and easy to install.

I think Java 11 is a good compromise between current, outdated Java 1.7 target and Java 17. 👍
It seems common in desktop environments, as far as I know, and it already has the var keyword.

There is still mention of Java 7 minimum requirement in Readme.md. It's in the first paragraph. 🙂
I would recommend just removing mention of Java version and Swing from "project's outline" altogether and put it somewhere lower, maybe into new readme section like "minimum requirements" or the like.
