Thanks for the idea. You're right, we can try to use supplementalMetadata.xml and likelySubtags.xml to calculate this map. Though, as it's pretty small at the moment and includes mostly Twitter-specific cases (for internal use of TwitterCLDR at Twitter I guess) I don't think it'd give much benefits.
On the other hand, it'd be great to expand the list of locales supported by TwitterCLDR by importing more CLDR resources, using validSubLocales
attribute from collation resources, and, finally, adding a generic method that will normalize arbitrary locales (like msa
, no
, and others) to one of the supported locales so we can lookup necessary resources for them.

Hey @srl295, not a bad idea! We just added support for locale code conversions (eg. converting from iso-639-1 to BCP-47), but that doesn't really help the TWITTER_LOCALE_MAP
. At some point it'd be great to support more extensive locale code conversions using CLDR data - perhaps you could draft a pull request for us?
