Visual Effects

Twitter: @twostraws

If you're able to target iOS 15 and later, this repository is no longer needed because there is dedicated SwiftUI API for this now. See here: How to add visual effect blurs

This repository is a wrapper for UIVisualEffectView and NSVisualEffectView, which will be useful until SwiftUI introduces an official view that does the same.

SwiftUI does not have an official UIVisualEffectView wrapper, so a number of folks have attempted to make one with varying degrees of success. Fortunately for all of us, Apple has released their own wrapper for both iOS and macOS, licensed under the MIT license. This repository hosts that wrapper as a Swift package, so you can use it yourself.

I (Paul Hudson) have made only tiny changes to their code to aid readability, and to allow it to work across both platforms from a single package.

Example code

This will place a VisualEffectBlur over a linear gradient, with some text inside the blur getting a vibrancy effect.

import SwiftUI
import VisualEffects

struct ContentView: View {
    var body: some View {
        ZStack {
            LinearGradient(
                gradient: Gradient(colors: [.red, .blue]),
                startPoint: .topLeading,
                endPoint: .bottomTrailing
            )

            VisualEffectBlur(blurStyle: .systemUltraThinMaterial, vibrancyStyle: .fill) {
                Text("Hello World!")
                    .font(.largeTitle)
            }
        }
    }
}

visualeffects's Issues

Can't add to a project in Xcode 11.5

Failed to resolve package dependencies because every version of VisualEffects contains incompatible tools version and root depends on VisualEffects 1.0.2..<2.0.0, version solving failed.

Cannot find 'VisualEffectBlur' in scope

I've received this message when I trying building the project.
It worked in the past but today for some reason It doesn't.
I didn't change anything in my code.

Running on xCode 12.3

Find a way to support corner radius on blurred views inside popovers

I tried to play with layer, corner & image masks, clipsToBounds property, container views, but couldn't find a way to achieve the desired behavior. Maybe together we can find how to make it work ๐Ÿ™‚

Upd: everything works fine in default windows, but blur-in-blur doesn't work.

Screen Shot 2020-06-28 at 15 09 14

let visualEffectView = NSVisualEffectView(frame: NSMakeRect(100, 100, 300, 300))
visualEffectView.material = .dark
visualEffectView.blendingMode = .behindWindow
visualEffectView.wantsLayer = true
visualEffectView.layer?.cornerRadius = 15.0
self.view.addSubview(visualEffectView)

let visualEffectView2 = NSVisualEffectView(frame: NSMakeRect(100, 100, 100, 100))
visualEffectView2.material = .light
visualEffectView2.blendingMode = .behindWindow
visualEffectView2.wantsLayer = true
visualEffectView2.layer?.cornerRadius = 15.0
visualEffectView.addSubview(visualEffectView2)

Naming improvements

There are different materials for NSVisualEffectView and not all of them are blurs, so maybe VisualEffectView will be more descriptive, that VisualEffectBlur.

Original?

Hi Paul,

Thanks for the repo, the mac version seems unfinished, may I ask where did you find these, please?
